Police Commissioner warns against complacency despite murder decline

Police Commissioner Dr Kevin Blake has warned officers against complacency despite a decline in murders, cautioning that criminal networks remain poised to exploit any lapse in policing discipline. His remarks come as the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) reported that up to March 14, there were 113 murders compared with the similar period in 2025, which saw 160 killings. Police statistics also show an overall 24 per cent reduction in major crimes, including shootings, robberies, rapes and break-ins.

Hodge misstep set to grant Douglas U20 World Champs silver

Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas is expected to receive an upgrade from the bronze medal she mined in the women’s 200m at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships following the announcement of Adaejah Hodge’s suspension. Douglas initially placed third in the 2024 World Junior’s 200m final with a time of 23.10 seconds. She finished behind Hodge of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), who took gold in 22.74, and Australia’s Torrie Lewis, who was second in 22.88.

In an effort to revive the flailing National Basketball League (NBL), the premier basketball league in the country, the Jamaica Basketball Association (JaBA), has appointed former Chairman of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) Christopher Williams as chairman of the competition’s commercial arm. Williams, who stepped aside as JPL chairman at the end of last season, noted that his role with the NBL, similarly to the JPL, is to make money, and believes the league has a lot of potential for growth and success.

The U17 Reggae Girlz will begin their quest to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup today when they face a tough matchup against Mexico in the final round of the Concacaf U17 Women’s Qualifiers. The young Reggae Girlz will face Mexico in the opening match of Group C at the Costa Rica Federation Field, with kick-off set for 11 a.m. Jamaica time. The fixture is expected to be Jamaica’s toughest of the group, with Mexico ranked as one of the top four nations in the confederation and were seeded into the final round of qualifiers.

Golding’s move

Despite not being able to implement policy decisions from his position in Parliament, much is expected when Opposition Leader Mark Golding makes his presentation this afternoon in the 2026–2027 Budget Debate at Gordon House. Golding, the third speaker in the annual debate, will take the floor after Opposition finance spokesman Julian Robinson spoke last Thursday in response to Finance Minister Fayval Williams, who opened the debate last Tuesday.

Family, friends celebrate Jo Mersa at eternal earthstrong tribute concert

Bob Marley’s former home and recording studio provided the backdrop to music, movement and memories on Saturday, as Joseph ‘Jo Mersa’ Marley’s tribute concert unfolded at the Bob Marley Museum before a large audience who came to honour the late reggae artiste, who passed away more than three years ago. Dubbed the Old Soul Live Unplugged concert, it celebrated the anniversary of his March 12 birthday and featured his family members, friends and associates of his father, Stephen Marley, who helped anchor the spectacular two-and-a-half-hour set.

Staple dose of activism at AGMs gone

Minority investor Orrette Staple would start the same way at annual general meetings: “Mr Chair, with your permission, I would like to ask questions, but before I do I also have some observations.” What followed –for the better part of three decades – was a performance that CEOs and minority shareholders knew well. Some appreciated it. Others vocally disapproved. Staple, who died last month aged 80, was farewelled on Thursday at a thanksgiving service at Meadowbrook United Church in Kingston.
