Nuclear energy within a decade: Holness says renegotiated JPS licence alone won't fix Jamaica's energy crisis

June 14, 2026 | News

Dream House | An off-the-grid eco home in Portland

Here is an isolated dream house, nestled in the picturesque Rio Grande Valley, in west Portland. For most of the year, because of rainfall, it is only accessible by a bamboo raft ride across the river and a seven-minute walk to the actual house.
It’s a densely forested property with a profound connection to nature, surrounded by flocks of bird life, including parrots and egrets. No words can adequately describe the sight of a private, wondrous waterfall feeding the rock swimming pool at its base.

RISKING DISASTER - Students, commuters turn gas stations into gathering spots, taxi hubs despite dangers

Across Jamaica, service stations are increasingly serving as social gathering spots and informal taxi hubs, attracting crowds far beyond their intended purpose and raising concerns about public safety.
As people congregate to socialise, await transportation or conduct business amid fuel pumps and heavy vehicular traffic, safety advocates warn that the combination of large crowds, moving vehicles and flammable fuels creates risks with potentially serious consequences.

Jamaica can run totally on renewables, says Uruguay expert

Jamaica can run fully on renewable energy, according to the architect of Uruguay's landmark energy transition, who urged the island to move beyond incremental targets.

"I will assure you that it will be more than 90 per cent," said Dr Ramón Méndez Galain, speaking at the annual Maurice Facey Lecture Series at the Jamaica Conference Centre on Wednesday under the theme ‘Breaking the Grid: Charting Jamaica's Path to Renewable Energy’.

Editorial | Chuck, CCJ and Sir Shridath

Two statements by Delroy Chuck in Parliament last week are in need of clarification, and perhaps, with respect to the second, a correction of the record.

In his contribution to the sector debates, Mr Chuck, the legal and constitutional affairs minister, addressed the old debate over whether Jamaica should leave the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC), and if it does, what should be the island’s final court. He expressed a preference for a domestic, or Jamaican final court.
